With mental health awareness week drawing to a close yesterday, and the Royal Horticultural Society’s flagship Chelsea Flower Show kicking off this morning, I’m excited to share a lovely little gem of a podcast with you.
BBC’s Music in Bloom Podcast
Five short episodes of 14 mins each, explore the surprising connections between music and gardens*. (It also helped pass the journey up and down the M3 motorway nicely yesterday!)
- Cultivate wellbeing – exploring why music and gardens are beneficial to our physical and mental health.
You also might like to tune into: - Good Vibrations – discussing whether music can help plants grow. (I suspect every keen gardener will be interested in this one!) And chatting to composer Erland Cooper about the inspiration behind his project ‘Music For Growing Flowers’ which featured as part of the 2022 Super Bloom in the moat of the Tower of London; and celebrated the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
- Stylistic similarities – sharing how celebrated landscape architect Tom Stuart-Smith, OBE, (who designed The National Garden Scheme Garden which appears on Main Avenue at Chelsea this week) approaches his work with musical constructs in mind.
(I’m always blown away when I hear the detail of the creative inspiration, influence and thought processes that go into a design!) - And fourthly, Seeds of Inspiration. I love the innovation of The Chelsea Physic Garden’s in-house composer, Helen Anahita Wilson sharing how gardens and specific plants have shaped her musical creation. (I know, who knew London’s oldest Botanic Garden had its own composer!)
